It is Spring time! Time to go up, down and around!  Yes, this great book written by Katherine Ayres and illustrated by Nadine Bernard Westcott. was recently released en Español!  Thank you Candlewick Press for this one!

arriba, abajo y alrededor

Arriba, Abajo y Alrededor is geared for ages 2 to 5, Spanish Speaking Children.  However, I think it is a perfect complement for elementary Spanish as a Second Language learners.

From seeds dropping into soil to corn bursting from its stalks, from children chasing butterflies to ants burrowing underground, everything in this vibrant Spanish language picture book pulses with life— in all directions! Sprightly illustrations set the mood for a rhythmic text that follows nature’s course to a final feast of backyard bounty.

Our experience with the book.-

While my kids read and understand Spanish, they still rather to hear English.  The day the book arrived, my kids new cousin was visiting us.  He is Dominican and he is learning English. He saw the book and started to read it to my kids.  My kids loved to hear his accent and hear his r’s rolling.  They loved the book and I really liked the idea to have an accomplice to read in Spanish to my bilingual audience.

Abril de Colores y Poesía

When living in Bolivia I loved September because it meant Winter is over and because September es “El mes del Amor”.   In the high-planes you do not see much change in plants and animals. But the thought of “Winter is over”, made me very happy.  Now, living in the other hemisphere, away from the Equator, and in a valley;  I truly live the magic of Primavera.

As it is writen in this Mexican poem,

De colores,
de colores se visten los campos en la primavera.
De colores,
de colores son los pajarillos que vienen de afuera.
De colores,
de colores es el arco iris que vemos lucir.
Y por eso los grandes amores de muchos
colores me gustan a mi.
Y por eso los grandes
amores de muchos colores me gustan a mi

I am sure all Latinos can sing this song!  And now, my class will be singing.  The video I chose, has the lyrics, that will help the students to sing, follow and memorize the song.

Do you want to sing with us?
